Softball and Hard Bullets

Condolences to the victims of the shooting rampage in Virginia. The Congressional ball game was always a joyful time. Such is the nature of violence, it can color the world and flavor every perception. It can overwhelm the other senses with dread.

We can mourn the senseless violence but we cannot hide behind the tearful and fearful expressions. This day did not come by itself. It followed many days filled with hateful speech and the slow pull like gravity of the GOP and the Right to the well of hatred and deadly arms to everyone.

Now that there are victims and they have names and affiliation there are platitudes and something resembling remorse. The tide that the past decade has raised will not fade so easily. There was a mountain of hateful thought and ill-will to millions that brought us to this awful state, and it will take a tidal force of goodwill to send it away.

So far, one wonders if the Right can still find the light, the light that sparks love and compassion, The light that brightens the dark and not lurks there in howls and growls to frighten the child in all of us...one simply wonders --like the climate-- have we passed the tipping point already?

We have no choice but to face today and hope for tomorrow-- we have no better chance than to face today and hope for tomorrow.

If God answers our highest prayers, we would have a chance to face this day-- and hope for tomorrow...hdm
